“PAPPAFISH”: EAT WELL AND GROW HEALTHY!
MARCHE REGION - MEASURE 3.4 DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MARKETS AND CAMPAIGNS ADDRESSED TO CONSUMERS 2007/2013 – Regional bylaw (EC) No 1198/2006 ART. 40 - DGR No 512/2013 FOOD EDUCATION CAMPAIGN IN SCHOOLS “EAT WELL, GROW HEALTHY!” and “A FISH FOR EVERY SEASON”
“PappaFish” Eat well, grow healthy!” It’s a food education campaign promoted by the Marche Region to introduce fresh local fish in regional school canteens. PappaFish is a unique project in Italy, made possible by means of the European Fisheries Fund (EFF).
For the first time, local fishery product is at the center of a comprehensive strategy involving primary and secondary public schools across the whole region, governments, operators, food technologists and the whole fishing industry in the Marche region.
The goal was to get children used to eating oily fish and seafood and to make them discover that is not only wonderful and healthy, but it’s great fun as well. At the same time, we also wanted to educate new generations to ethical consumption, respect for the environment and cultural identity. For the first time, thanks to “PappaFish”, fresh, local and seasonal fish has replaced frozen fish in school canteens, thus significantly improving school catering quality.
Partners in Service ltd is responsible for developing, organizing and reporting the project “Pappa Fish: Eat well and grow healthy!” as well as managing the food Education campaign. Partners in Service supported the following eight municipalities in the province of Ascoli Piceno: Spinetoli, Grottammare, Monteprandone, Offida, Monsampolo del Tronto, Folignano, Colli del Tronto and Acquaviva Picena- plus Fabriano (AN).
As part of The Educational Campaign, students were trained and guided to get to know fresh local fish coming from the Adriatic Sea. Fish is an important but critical part of a healthy eating regimen, since children tend not to eat it.
With the 2014-2015 II Food Education Campaign “Eat well and grow healthy “, we want to keep up improvements in the public school canteens by providing them with fresh local fish from the Adriatic sea and to go on with the food education process we started in 2013-2014.
Our goal is to get children used to eating oily fish and seafood, and make them discover that is not only tasty and healthy, but it’s great fun as well.
At the same time, we are in charge of educating new generations to ethical consumption, respect for the environment and cultural identity.
The project features two simultaneous phases. During the first technical-experimental stage, we periodically included fish courses in school canteen menus, and made them even tastier and creative (e.g. risotto topped with oily fish ragù sauce) with the help of chefs and canteen committees. Children rated their appreciation by means of a simplified questionnaire (for example, with colored stickers: green: I like it / red, I don’t like it) so that we could improve recipes and build targeted educational projects.
The second part took place in classrooms, with educational tours, storytelling and creative games, practical lab, artistic and other psycho-pedagogical activities, developed with teachers to tailor everything to the children’s age and the needs of the class.
Partners in Service SRLs was in charge of presenting projects and managing food education, by customizing it for different age groups and school needs. We also dealt with the project logistics and accounting for the following municipalities in the province of Ascoli Piceno:
